This waterwheel-driven three-throw beam pump was installed in 1782 to pump water
from the River Rother up to Petworth, 1½ miles away and 150ft. higher.
It is a scheduled Ancient Monument and open from Easter until the end of
October.
In 2012, with funding from grants and the Leconfield Estate, the Trust repaired
the sluice structure
and installed a 15kW Archimedes Screw water turbine to generate electricity from
a renewable source.
Visitors can see this operating during site opening hours.

The heritage site is under the care of
The Coultershaw Trust
(registered Charity no. 1096077)
and operated by volunteers.
