Engine House
Back Home Up Next

The c. 1919 Engine House, built to accommodate a backup power source for the mill, for use when the river was low.
Originally this housed a single engine and a Mess for the mill workers.
A shaft across the sluices carried the power

After the 1923 fire, which destroyed the original mill, the interior was opened out to house two engines and a fuel tank.
This to assist in powering the much larger mill which replaced the burnt out one.

Building used as Engine House for new mill after 1923.

Unusual shape Fuel Tank, thought to come from a naval vessel.
The two engines are said to have been former marine ones.
One of these has reportedly been located with the hope of it being returned for restoration to working order.
